How to choose a graphics card power cable
Connector type. Start with the connector on the graphics card: one or more 8-pin PCIe connectors (6+2) or a single 12VHPWR / 12V-2x6. Many of the latest high-end cards use the latter, while older and mid-range cards usually have 8-pin connectors. The number of connectors must match what the card manufacturer specifies.
Power supply compatibility. The pinout on modular power supplies differs between manufacturers and sometimes between series from the same maker, so a cable made for another unit can damage your hardware. Choose a cable whose description names your power supply model or series. Manufacturer cables are often made only for their own units.
Length and routing. Measure the distance from the graphics card connector to the power supply connector, including any bends behind the motherboard tray. A large case may need a longer cable, while in a small case an overlong one is hard to tuck away. Do not bend a 12VHPWR cable right at the plug: leave a few centimetres straight and push the connector in fully.
Looks and thickness. Cables with a braided or single-colour sleeve mainly change the appearance, so they matter most in cases with a glass panel. They are usually thicker and stiffer than standard cables, so check that they fit in a small case.

Can I use a cable from a different power supply manufacturer?
It is best not to. The pinout on modular power supplies varies, and the wrong cable can damage the graphics card or the power supply. Use a cable that clearly names your power supply model or series.
What is the difference between 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6?
12V-2x6 is an updated version of the 12VHPWR connector with revised pins to make the connection more reliable. The two are physically compatible, but always check suitability in the descriptions of the graphics card and the cable.
Do I need a new cable if my graphics card has a 12VHPWR connector?
Not always. Many such graphics cards ship with an adapter that plugs into several 8-pin power supply connectors. If your power supply has its manufacturer's own 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 cable, using it is usually simpler and tidier.
How many 8-pin cables does a graphics card need?
It depends on the card model, so check the manufacturer's specification. For more power-hungry cards, separate cables for each connector are generally recommended rather than one cable with two plugs.
