How to choose an extension lead
Number of sockets. Choose one or two more sockets than you need today, as new devices appear around a desk quickly. Our range covers models with 1 to 6 sockets, and many have 3, 4 or 6. If you use bulky power adapters, check that the sockets are spaced far enough apart.
Cable length. Measure the distance from the wall socket to your equipment and add some slack so the cable is not stretched. Many models have a 1.5 m cable, but 2, 3, 5 and 10 m lengths are also available. If the cable is wound on a reel, unwind it fully, because a coiled cable can overheat under a heavy load.
Current and load. Most extension leads are designed for a 230 V supply and 16 A, and our range includes many of these, although some models have a 10 A, 13 A or lower limit. The combined power of everything plugged in must stay within the stated limit, so do not run a heater or kettle alongside other equipment. A standard model is enough for a computer, monitor and printer.
Switch and protection. A switch lets you cut power to all connected equipment with one press instead of pulling plugs. Our range has models both with and without a switch. For sensitive electronics, choose a model with surge protection, because a basic extension lead does not offer it.
Where it will be used. Standard models suit indoor rooms, while outdoors, in a garage or in a workshop you need a lead protected against moisture and dust (marked IP44 or higher). Check this marking in the product specification.

Frequently asked questions about extension leads
How many sockets should an extension lead for a computer desk have?
Four or six sockets are usually enough. One goes to the computer or laptop charger, another to the monitor, another to the printer and one more to a phone charger. It is worth leaving at least one socket free for later.
Is an extension lead the same as a surge protector?
No. A basic extension lead only adds sockets, while a surge protector also shields connected equipment from sudden voltage spikes. The product specification states whether a model includes this protection.
What length of extension lead should I buy?
Choose a lead that reaches the wall socket without strain, with about half a metre to spare. For a desk, 1.5 or 2 m is usually enough, while 3, 5 and 10 m models suit longer distances such as a workshop or garden.
Can I plug one extension lead into another?
It is not recommended. The load of everything on the first lead adds up, so the cable and plug can overheat. If you run out of sockets, it is safer to buy a single lead with more sockets.
