Optical drives

Optical drives

This category covers external and internal DVD drives: DVD-RW writers, Super Multi models and DVD-ROM readers for laptops and desktop PCs. They suit anyone who needs to read an old disc, install software or burn a data archive. You will find models from ASUS, H.L Data Storage, Gembird and Dell.

How to choose an optical drive

External or internal. A laptop without a built-in disc drive needs an external unit with a USB cable, while a desktop PC with a free bay in the case can take an internal one. Our range includes both, so check whether a model is meant for laptops, desktops or both before you buy.

Connection. External drives most often use USB 2.0, and there are also USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB Type-C versions. If your laptop has only USB-C ports, choose a USB-C model or buy an adapter. Internal drives connect through Serial ATA (SATA), so they need a free SATA port on the motherboard.

Supported discs. A DVD-ROM drive only reads discs, while DVD-RW, DVD±R/RW and DVD Super Multi models also write them. The DL marking means the drive can write dual-layer discs, which hold more than standard ones. DVD drives also read CDs, but they cannot read Blu-ray discs.

Write speed and disc loading. In our range the most common DVD-R write speed is 8x, which is enough to burn a data archive or a film in a few minutes. Most drives have a tray, though some models take the disc through a slot or load from the front. A slot-loading drive looks tidier because it has no protruding tray.

Brands we carry

  • ASUS: known for slim external DVD writers for laptops, and the brand with the most models in our range.
  • H.L Data Storage, Hitachi and LG: H.L Data Storage is Hitachi-LG Data Storage, a joint venture of Hitachi and LG that specialises in optical drives.
  • Gembird: a maker of computer accessories and cables that also offers optical drives.
  • Dell, HP and Fujitsu: primarily computer and laptop manufacturers whose names also appear on optical drives.

Also in our range: Intenso, Qoltec, Savio and XLYNE.

Frequently asked questions

Does a laptop need an optical drive?

Most modern laptops have no built-in disc drive, so you need an external DVD drive to read or burn discs. It connects over USB and you only plug it in when needed, for example to install software or read an old disc.

What is the difference between a DVD-ROM and a DVD-RW drive?

A DVD-ROM drive only reads discs, while a DVD-RW drive both reads and writes them. It can also erase and rewrite DVD-RW discs. If you never burn discs, a reader is enough.

Can a DVD drive read Blu-ray discs?

No, a DVD drive cannot read Blu-ray discs because they need a different laser. Blu-ray discs require a separate Blu-ray drive, which usually reads DVDs and CDs as well.

Which USB connection should I choose for an external DVD drive?

If your computer has a USB-A port, a USB 2.0 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 model will work, and if it has only USB-C, choose a USB Type-C drive. USB 2.0 is normally enough for burning DVDs, because the drive itself limits the speed, not the connection.
