Firewalls

Firewalls

Firewalls are network security devices that filter traffic between your internal network and the internet. They suit small businesses, offices and more demanding home networks. Our range currently has two D-Link products, so the choice is small, but it is enough to compare the key parameters side by side.

How to choose a firewall

Throughput. Look at the speed a device can handle with its security features switched on, as this is usually well below the maximum figure in the manufacturer's specification. With a fast fibre connection or many users, leave enough headroom so the firewall does not become a bottleneck.

Connections. Check the number and speed of the WAN and LAN ports. Gigabit ports are the usual minimum today, and a second WAN port is useful if two providers supply your internet. A separate DMZ port is needed when a publicly accessible server runs on your network.

Security features. The basics are stateful traffic filtering and rule management. For business use, VPN access for remote staff or branch offices (IPsec or SSL), intrusion prevention and content filtering are often important too. Some features need a separate licence or subscription, so confirm what is included before buying.

Management and mounting. A desktop case suits a small office, while rack-mount models belong in a server cabinet. A clear web management interface matters most if you have no network administrator: creating rules should not require command-line knowledge.

Firewall FAQ

What is the difference between a firewall and a router?

A router directs data between networks, while a firewall decides which of that traffic to allow or block. Many routers include a basic built-in firewall, but a dedicated device offers more rules, logs and extra features such as VPN.

Does a home network need a hardware firewall?

Usually not, because the firewall in an ordinary router is enough for a home network. A separate firewall makes sense if you run a server at home, connect remotely to a company network or want detailed control over traffic.

Does a firewall slow down the internet?

It can, if its throughput is lower than your connection speed or many security features are enabled. Compare throughput with filtering switched on, not just the maximum figure quoted.

What is a VPN on a firewall used for?

A VPN creates an encrypted connection between your network and a remote device or another office. This lets staff reach shared files and internal systems safely from home. Before buying, check which VPN types the device supports and how many simultaneous connections it allows.
