Model kits and hobby supplies

This category covers plastic scale model kits, modelling materials, paints, glues and craft tools. It suits beginner modellers, collectors and anyone who enjoys making things by hand. Most of the range is REVELL kits, alongside CRICUT, EVERGREEN and GAMES WORKSHOP products, with over 200 items in total.

How to choose a model kit and hobby accessories

Model type and scale. Start with the subject: cars, aircraft, ships or other vehicles. Scale tells you how much smaller the model is than the real thing, so a 1:24 model is larger and more detailed than a 1:72 one, but it needs more shelf space.

Difficulty level. Beginners do best with kits that have a modest number of parts and clear assembly instructions. Experienced modellers often look for kits with hundreds of small pieces. Check the difficulty level and recommended age given by the manufacturer before buying.

Glue, paint and tools. Most plastic model kits are sold without glue or paint, so you buy these separately. You will usually need plastic cement, fine brushes, cutters for removing parts from the sprue and sanding tools. Check what the kit includes so you are not stuck halfway through the build.

Materials for scratch-building. If you want to build or improve a model yourself, look for styrene sheets, strips and profiles. They can be cut, glued and sanded like ordinary model plastic, which is handy for adding extra details or making missing parts.

Cutting machines for crafts. When choosing a cutting machine and its materials, check which materials and thicknesses the machine can handle. Paper, vinyl and fabric often need different blades and mats, so confirm this before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Can a beginner build a plastic model kit?

Yes, a beginner can build a plastic model kit if they choose one with few parts and clear instructions. Besides the kit itself, you will usually need glue, paint and cutters for removing parts. A smaller scale and a simple shape make a sensible first project.

What glue do plastic models need?

Plastic models need glue made specifically for styrene. It slightly softens the plastic surface, so the joined parts fuse firmly together. All-purpose or super glues often leave visible marks and are harder to control.

What can you cut with a CRICUT machine?

Many CRICUT machines cut paper, vinyl, sticker film and some fabrics. What a specific model can handle depends on its blade and the maximum material thickness. Check the materials listed in the machine's description before you buy.

What is the difference between 1:72 and 1:48 scale models?

A 1:48 model is larger than a 1:72 model, because the smaller number means less reduction from the original. The larger size allows more detail but needs more space and more paint. Smaller scales are easier to fit if you want to build a bigger collection.
