How to choose a measuring tool
The measuring task. For furniture, shelves and small repairs, a tape measure and a spirit level are usually enough. A laser distance meter is quicker for room lengths and areas, a line laser level marks lines on walls and floors, and checking electrical circuits calls for a multimeter or a clamp meter.
Accuracy and working range. Laser tools state their tolerance in millimetres over a given distance, so compare those figures between models. A distance meter's range should cover the longest distances you measure, and the working range of a laser level outdoors often depends on whether a detector is used.
Laser beam visibility. A green beam is easier for the eye to see than a red one, which makes it more comfortable in a bright room. Outdoors in sunlight, the beam can usually be found only with a detector, which responds even when the beam itself is invisible.
Durability. Tools on a building site get dropped, covered in dust and splashed with water, so look for stated dust and water protection (the IP rating) and drop resistance. For a spirit level, a rigid profile matters, because a flexing level gives false readings.

What is the difference between a green and a red laser beam?
A green beam looks brighter to the human eye than a red beam of the same power, so it is easier to see in a well-lit room. A red beam is often enough for short distances and dimmer rooms. Outdoors, a detector helps with either colour.
Can a laser distance meter replace a tape measure?
Not entirely. It measures long distances quickly and helps calculate area or volume, but for small parts, corners and places without a good reflecting surface, a tape measure is still more convenient. Many tradespeople keep both.
How do I check the accuracy of a spirit level?
Place the level on a flat surface and note where the bubble sits, then turn it through 180 degrees in the same spot. If the bubble stays in the same position, the level is accurate. If the reading changes, the level is no longer true.
What kind of laser level do I need for tiling or hanging shelves?
A line laser level that projects a horizontal and a vertical line is usually enough. For larger jobs, such as levelling a floor or setting out a fence outdoors, a rotary laser with a detector is a better fit.
