How to choose a laptop power supply
Compatibility with your model. Start with the label on your current charger or the laptop's specification sheet, which lists voltage, current and wattage. Even within one manufacturer, different laptop series often need different adapters, so check the exact model before ordering.
Wattage. The new charger's wattage (W) should not be lower than the original's. A weaker adapter may struggle to charge a laptop under load or run hot, while a more powerful one does no harm, because the laptop draws only what it needs. Office laptops often need between 45 and 65 W, while workstations and gaming models need considerably more.
Connector type. Many newer thin laptops charge over USB-C with Power Delivery, while older and more powerful models use a round barrel plug or a manufacturer-specific connector, such as the magnetic Surface Connect on Microsoft Surface devices. A laptop can charge over USB-C only if its own port supports charging and the adapter's output is high enough.
Original or compatible. An original manufacturer adapter guarantees an exact match, whereas some laptops with a proprietary connector may reject a third-party charger or limit charging speed. Compatible and universal adapters often come with interchangeable tips, so one charger can serve several laptops. Choose a product with a CE mark.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a charger with a higher wattage than the original?
Yes, provided the voltage and connector match the original adapter. The laptop draws only the current it needs, so extra wattage is harmless. A lower-wattage adapter may fail to charge the laptop or may overheat.
How do I find out which power supply fits my laptop?
Look at the label on your old charger, which gives the voltage (V), current (A) and wattage (W). If you no longer have the charger, the laptop's model name is printed on its underside. You can then use it to find a matching original or compatible adapter.
Can I charge a laptop over USB-C?
Only if the laptop's USB-C port supports charging with Power Delivery. This is stated in the manufacturer's specification or marked beside the port. The charger's output must also meet the laptop's needs, otherwise charging will be slow or will not work at all.
Will a compatible charger work instead of the original?
Usually yes, if the voltage, wattage and connector type match. Some laptops with a proprietary connector may not recognise a non-original adapter and may limit charging. In that case the manufacturer's original power supply is the safer option.
