Power tools

Power tools: over 23,000 products, including drills and drivers, grinders, saws, garden machinery, hand tools, drill bits, discs and other accessories. The range suits home DIYers and professionals. Leading makers include Bosch, Makita, Metabo and Einhell, with Wera, Gedore and Knipex for hand tools.

How to choose a power tool

Power source. A cordless tool suits jobs where there is no socket nearby or where you work at height and a cable gets in the way. A corded tool has no charging breaks, so it is better for long sessions in one place, such as grinding or cutting a lot of material.

Battery system. Manufacturers usually have one battery family that fits many of their tools. Once you pick a system, you can add further tools without a battery and charger. A higher capacity (Ah) gives longer run time, but the battery is heavier.

Motor and torque. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes, so it wears less and makes better use of the charge. For a drill or driver, torque matters, and if you will drill brick or concrete you need a model with a hammer function.

How often you will use it. If you will pick up a tool a few times a year, a home-use model is enough. For daily work, professional ranges are worth choosing: they cope with longer loads and many parts are easier to replace.

Accessories. A drill bit or disc must match the material: wood, metal, concrete or brick. For drills, the chuck type matters (keyless chuck or SDS), and for a grinder the disc diameter must match the guard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a drill driver and an impact driver?

A drill driver drills holes and drives screws, while an impact driver adds short rotary blows and drives long, tough screws more easily. Impact drivers usually take hex bits and are not suited to precise drilling. For most home jobs a drill driver is enough.

Will a battery from one tool fit another?

It will only fit if both tools belong to the same manufacturer's battery system. Batteries from different manufacturers are generally not compatible. Check the system name and voltage before you buy.

What size of angle grinder should I choose?

For household jobs, 125 mm disc angle grinders are the most common, as they are light and discs are easy to find. Larger 230 mm discs suit thicker cuts but need more strength and care. Always use the guard and safety glasses.

What should I buy for a first home tool kit?

Start with a cordless drill driver and a set of drill bits and screwdriver bits, plus screwdrivers, pliers and a spanner. A tool box or bag keeps it all in one place. You can add a grinder or saw later if your projects need one.
