Laser printers

This category contains more than 200 laser printers, both monochrome and colour, for home offices, small businesses and workgroups. Brother, HP, Kyocera and Canon make up most of the range, alongside Lexmark and Xerox.

Models run from simple A4 printers to a few A3 machines, with one or several paper trays.

How to choose a laser printer

Monochrome or colour. Our range has more monochrome models, but there are plenty of colour printers too, which use black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges. If you mostly print invoices, contracts and letters, a monochrome printer is cheaper to run. Colour is worth choosing when you need presentations, brochures or charts.

Paper size and trays. Most models print on A4, A5 and A6 paper, and a few also handle A3. The number of input trays in our range goes from one to three, and output capacity from 50 to 500 sheets. A second tray helps if you use letterhead or paper of a different weight, and a larger output tray suits long documents.

Cost per page. Check how many pages a toner cartridge yields and whether the drum is replaced separately. A high-yield cartridge usually costs less per page, while the starter cartridge supplied with a new printer is often smaller.

Resolution and memory. 600 x 600 DPI is enough for text, and 1200 x 1200 DPI is available on many of our models, which helps with fine drawings and graphics. Internal memory ranges from 64 to 1024 MB, and more is useful for complex PDF files and heavy network printing.

Connectivity and duplex printing. If several people share the printer, choose a model with Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Duplex printing cuts paper use. Look for both features in the specification of each model, as not every printer has them.

Brands in our range

  • Brother: known for monochrome laser printers for home and small offices, and the brand with the most models in this category.
  • HP (including HP Inc. and Hewlett-Packard): the main laser line is called LaserJet, and it is widely used in offices.
  • Kyocera: ECOSYS printers have a long-life drum, so usually only the toner cartridge needs replacing.
  • Canon: its laser printers are sold under the i-SENSYS name for homes and offices.
  • Lexmark: focuses mainly on business customers and workgroup printing.
  • Xerox: a maker of office printing and copying equipment, with colour laser devices in its range.

Also in our range: Pantum, Ricoh, OKI.

Laser printer FAQ

What is the difference between a laser and an inkjet printer?

A laser printer uses toner powder that a fuser bonds to the paper, while an inkjet sprays liquid ink. As a result, laser prints do not smudge when damp, and toner does not dry out during long periods of inactivity. Laser printers are usually the better fit when you print text documents often.

Is a colour laser printer worth buying?

It is worth it if you need colour prints regularly, for example for reports, presentations or leaflets. A colour printer uses four cartridges, so it costs more to run than a monochrome one. If you rarely need colour, a monochrome model is usually enough.

Can a laser printer print on A3 paper?

Yes, but only a model that supports the format. In our range the maximum size of most laser printers is A4, while a few models handle A3. Always check the paper size in the specification.

What print resolution is enough for office documents?

600 x 600 DPI is usually enough for office documents. A resolution of 1200 x 1200 DPI gives slightly crisper fine lines and small type, which is more noticeable with drawings or graphics. For everyday text, print speed and cartridge yield matter more.
