How to choose drill and screwdriver accessories
Material you are working with. Wood bits have a centring point, metal calls for HSS (high-speed steel) bits, and masonry and concrete need bits with a carbide tip. A bit chosen for the wrong material soon goes blunt or overheats.
Shank and fitting. The bit must suit your tool's chuck. Many screwdriver bits have a 1/4 inch hex shank, while bits for rotary hammers often use an SDS-plus shank. Check which shank your tool accepts before you buy.
Bit profile and size. The most common profiles are PH, PZ, Torx and hex. The bit has to match the screw head exactly, otherwise the recess is chewed up and the screw is hard to remove.
Impact or standard use. An impact driver needs bits marked for impact use. They cope with sudden torque and break less often than standard bits, which are harder and more brittle.
Set or single pieces. A set is handy when you do not yet know which sizes you will need. The sizes you use most are worth buying individually, since they wear out first.

Frequently asked questions
Which drill bit should I choose for concrete and masonry?
Concrete and masonry need a bit with a carbide tip. An ordinary HSS bit goes blunt quickly in these materials. For hard concrete a rotary hammer with SDS-plus bits works best, while softer masonry can be drilled with a hammer drill.
What is the difference between PH and PZ bits?
A PZ (Pozidriv) bit has extra small marks between the arms of the cross, so it grips the screw recess more firmly. A PH (Phillips) bit is the older design and is more likely to slip out. A PZ bit will fit a PH screw but the grip is poorer, so it is better to use the profile stated for your screws.
Can I use standard bits in an impact driver?
It is better not to. The sudden torque of an impact driver can snap a standard bit. Choose bits marked for impact use.
Is it worth buying a drill bit and screwdriver bit set?
A set is worth buying when you do not yet know which sizes you will need, or when you work with several materials. It holds the common sizes in one case that keeps everything tidy. If you only use one or two sizes, single pieces are cheaper and more practical.
