Automatic coffee machines are for anyone who wants espresso, cappuccino or a long coffee without the manual work: the machine grinds the beans, brews the coffee and pours it into the cup. Our range has over 40 models, mostly from DeLonghi, Philips, Siemens and Saeco, along with Jura and Krups.
How to choose an automatic coffee machine
Type of coffee. If you only drink freshly ground coffee, a machine with a bean hopper is enough. Some models in our range also have a separate chute for ground coffee, which is handy for decaf or when you have run out of beans.
Milk preparation. If you often make cappuccino or latte, check how the machine handles milk. Some models have an automatic milk system, others only a steam wand that you use to froth the milk yourself. An automatic system is more convenient but needs regular cleaning, so find out whether it comes apart easily.
Capacities. The most common water tank in our range is 1.8 L, with 1.4 L, 2 L and 2.5 L versions also available. Bean containers mostly hold between 250 and 300 g. That suits one or two people, while a larger household or a small office will appreciate a bigger water tank, since it will not need filling every day.
Controls and maintenance. Most of our machines have touch controls, though some use buttons or a rotary dial, which can be simpler to operate without a long learning curve. Before buying, check whether the brew unit can be removed for rinsing and whether the machine has an automatic cleaning and descaling programme. Power is usually 1450 or 1500 W, so an ordinary household socket is enough.

Frequently asked questions about automatic coffee machines
How does an automatic coffee machine differ from a capsule machine?
An automatic machine grinds beans before every cup, while a capsule machine uses pre-packed coffee. With an automatic machine you can adjust the grind and the amount of coffee, and beans usually cost less than capsules. The trade-off is that it takes up more space and needs more careful upkeep.
Can I use ground coffee in an automatic coffee machine?
It depends on the model. Our range includes machines that take beans only and others that accept both beans and ground coffee. If you plan to use ground coffee regularly, look for a model with a separate chute for it.
How often should I clean and descale the machine?
The milk system should be rinsed after use, following the manufacturer's instructions, and descaling is due when the machine prompts you. Hard water builds up limescale faster, so you will need to descale more often. A water filter, if your model supports one, can reduce the work.
What size water tank do I need at home?
For most homes a 1.8 L tank is enough, and it is the size found on most machines in our range. It lets you make several cups without refilling. If several people drink coffee through the day, choose a larger tank such as 2 or 2.5 L.
