Bits, blades and accessories

Bits, blades and accessories

This category covers drill bits for metal, masonry and wood, cutting and grinding discs, screwdriver bits and other power tool accessories. It suits tradespeople and home DIYers alike, with over 2,700 products in our range. Bosch, Makita, Wera and KWB account for many of the models.

How to choose drill bits, discs and accessories

Material you are working with. Metal drill bits are usually made from HSS steel, masonry and concrete need bits with a carbide tip, and wood is drilled with twist bits or brad-point bits. A bit matched to the wrong material blunts quickly and leaves a rough hole.

Shank and fitting. Check that the shank suits your tool's chuck. An SDS-plus shank is used in rotary hammers, a hex shank is typical for screwdriver bits and impact drivers, and most bits for ordinary drills have a round shank.

Diameter and length. Choose the bit diameter to match the plug or screw, and the length to match the thickness of the material. Disc diameter must match your angle grinder, and the maximum speed printed on the disc must not be lower than the tool's speed.

Purpose of the disc. Cutting discs are thinner and made only for cutting, while grinding discs are thicker and made for cleaning or levelling surfaces. Never use one in place of the other, as it is dangerous. Also check whether the disc is meant for steel, stainless steel or stone.

Bit profile and sets. The profile of a screwdriver bit (PH, PZ, Torx, hex) must match the screw head exactly, or you risk damaging it. For an impact driver, choose bits designed to withstand impact. A set is convenient for getting started, while single pieces make sense when only a few sizes wear out.

Brands in our range

  • Bosch: the largest brand in this category, known for drill bits, saw blades, cutting discs and bits for a variety of materials.
  • Makita: best known for cordless tools, so its accessories are often chosen to go with the same maker's drills and drivers.
  • Wera: specialises in screwdrivers and bits, and is known for its Impaktor impact bits.
  • Wiha: a German hand tool maker known for screwdrivers, including insulated ones for electrical work.
  • DeWalt: offers impact-rated bits and drill bits made for heavy use on building sites.
  • Fein: a power tool maker whose accessories also cover oscillating multi-tools.
  • Metabo: famous for angle grinders, so its cutting and grinding discs are often paired with those tools.

Also in our range: KWB, Cimco, Wolfcraft and Einhell.

Frequently asked questions

Which drill bit should I use for concrete and brick?

Concrete and brick need a bit with a carbide tip, and when drilling with a rotary hammer the shank is usually SDS-plus. An ordinary metal or wood bit blunts very quickly here. Choose the diameter to match the plug you plan to fit.

Do accessories from different brands fit each other's tools?

Usually yes, as long as the shank and size match. For example, a hex-shank bit fits most impact drivers and drills with a quick-change chuck. Oscillating tools use different fitting systems, so compatibility needs checking there.

What is the difference between a cutting disc and a grinding disc?

A cutting disc is thin and made for cutting, while a grinding disc is thicker and made for smoothing surfaces. A cutting disc is not designed to take side load, so it must not be used for grinding. Both types also differ by the material they are made for.

When should I replace a drill bit or disc?

Replace a drill bit when it overheats, needs heavy pressure or leaves an uneven hole. Replace a disc if you see cracks, a clearly reduced diameter or a broken working layer. A damaged disc must not be used, because it can break apart at high speed.
