How to choose a hair straightener
Type. A straightening iron presses hair between two heated plates and suits long, thick or stubborn hair. A straightening brush smooths and combs at the same time, so it is quicker and easier to use, although the finish may be less sleek. In our range there are more irons than brushes.
Temperature. Fine, coloured or damaged hair needs a lower temperature, while thick or curly hair needs more heat. The maximum temperature in our range runs from 200 to 230 °C, and the minimum setting starts at 120 °C. Some models have only two heat settings and others as many as 12, so if your hair is sensitive it is worth choosing a straightener with more settings.
Plate coating and width. Ceramic plates heat evenly, while a tourmaline coating or ionisation function helps reduce static. Narrow plates are easier to handle on short hair and fringes, and wider plates get through long hair faster.
Heat-up time and cord. Some models are ready in 3 seconds, while others need 30 seconds or even a minute. Many models have a 1.8 m cord, but there are also 2.7 m cords, which helps when the socket is far from the mirror.

Frequently asked questions about hair straighteners
What temperature is right for straightening hair?
Fine or damaged hair is usually straightened at around 150 to 180 °C, while thick, hard-to-straighten hair needs roughly 180 to 200 °C. The top setting of 230 °C is rarely necessary. It is best to start low and raise the heat only if the hair will not straighten.
What is the difference between a straightening brush and a straightening iron?
A straightening brush combs and straightens hair in a single motion, so it is faster and easier for beginners. An iron clamps each section between plates, which gives a sleeker finish and also lets you create waves or curls. Our range includes both types.
Can you curl hair with a straightener?
Yes, a straightener can make waves and curls if its plates have rounded edges. Wrap a section of hair around the closed plates and glide slowly downwards. Narrower plates usually make this easier.
Can you use a hair straightener abroad?
Yes, if the rating on the device covers 110 to 240 V, it can be plugged in almost anywhere in the world. Our range includes models with this rating. Usually you only need a suitable plug adapter.
