Grass trimmers and brush cutters

Grass trimmers and brush cutters

Grass trimmers are designed for lawn edges, corners and the spots beside fences, trees and paths where a mower cannot reach. Our range includes more than 160 models, from simple garden trimmers for the home to tools made for demanding work. The main brands are Bosch, Makita, Gardena, Einhell and DeWalt.

How to choose a grass trimmer

Power source. A mains trimmer needs no charging, but it is limited by cable length and the distance to a socket. A cordless model lets you move freely around the whole plot and runs more quietly than a petrol one, while petrol trimmers are usually chosen for large areas despite the fuel and servicing they need. For a small or medium garden, a mains or cordless trimmer is normally enough.

Battery system. If you already own a drill or driver from the same manufacturer, look for a trimmer that takes the same battery, so you avoid buying another battery and charger. Voltage (V) indicates the tool's power, while capacity (Ah) determines how long you can work without a break. A medium-capacity battery covers a small plot, but a larger one is worth having a spare for.

Cutting head and width. Most trimmers cut with nylon line, which handles grass and young weeds. A wider cutting swath clears open areas faster, while a narrower one is more precise beside flower beds and walls. If you need to deal with tougher weeds, choose a model that accepts thicker line or cutting blades.

Weight and handling. You carry a trimmer in your hands, so balance matters as much as power. Check whether the shaft is telescopic, whether the auxiliary handle adjusts and whether the head can be turned to trim lawn edges. A shoulder strap mount helps on longer jobs.

Brands we carry

  • Bosch: has a green line for home users and a blue line for professionals, and its garden tools for the home often use Power for All 18 V batteries.
  • Makita: known for its 18 V LXT battery system, which fits a very large number of its tools, as well as the higher-power 40 V XGT line.
  • Gardena: specialises in garden equipment and watering systems, so its trimmers sit naturally alongside its other garden tools.
  • Einhell: builds the Power X-Change system, where one battery fits a large number of its home and garden tools.
  • DeWalt: aimed mainly at professionals and known for its 18 V XR and 54 V FlexVolt battery systems.

Grass trimmer FAQ

Is a cordless or a mains grass trimmer better?

A cordless trimmer is more convenient when the plot is large or the socket is far away, because there is no cable to drag around. A mains model is usually lighter and has no run-time limit, but it only works within reach of the cable. For a small garden, either type will do the job.

What is the difference between a grass trimmer and a brushcutter?

A grass trimmer cuts with nylon line and is meant for lawn care. A brushcutter is generally more powerful and can use metal blades to cut thick undergrowth and young shrubs. If you only maintain a lawn and its edges, a trimmer is enough.

What thickness of trimmer line should I use?

Use the line thickness the trimmer manufacturer specifies, because line that is too thick overloads the motor. Home trimmers commonly take line of around 1.6 or 2 mm. Thicker line lasts longer and cuts tougher weeds better.

Can one battery be used for several tools?

Yes, but only for tools from the same manufacturer and the same battery system. For example, a Makita 18 V LXT battery fits other LXT tools, and an Einhell Power X-Change battery fits Einhell tools. Before buying, check that the trimmer's battery system matches the one you already own.
