How to choose dust extraction accessories
Tool type and model. A shroud made for drilling into walls will not fit an angle grinder or a sander, so decide first which job the accessory is for. Many shrouds and extraction units are designed around a particular manufacturer's tools, so check compatibility with your model and the drill bit or disc diameter before buying.
Connection size. Hose and tool connection diameters differ between manufacturers and vacuum models. Measure the cuff on your vacuum hose and compare it with the accessory's connector: if they do not match, you will need an adapter.
Type of dust and vacuum class. For wood or plasterboard dust an L class vacuum is usually enough, while concrete, brick and masonry dust, which contains quartz, calls for an M class vacuum with a suitable filter. The accessory does not hold back dust by itself, so the vacuum must suit the material you are working on.
Hose length and flexibility. A longer hose lets you keep the vacuum further from the work area, but it is heavier and can snag when you work on a ladder. A light, flexible hose is easier to handle overhead, and an antistatic hose helps when sanding wood because it builds up less static.

Do dust extraction accessories fit all power tools?
No, most accessories are made for a certain type of tool or even a specific model. A shroud for drilling will not help when sanding, and manufacturers' systems use different connectors. Check the compatibility given in the product description and the hose connection size.
Do I need a vacuum cleaner when drilling concrete?
Yes, dust extraction is advisable when drilling concrete. Concrete dust contains fine quartz particles that are harmful to the lungs, so an M class vacuum with a suitable filter is recommended. A shroud or extraction attachment collects the dust right at the drilling point.
What is the difference between an L class and an M class vacuum?
An M class vacuum filters more finely than an L class one and suits more hazardous dust, such as concrete or masonry. L class is meant for less harmful dust, such as wood shavings or plasterboard dust. If you work with a mix of materials, M class is the safer choice.
Can I use a household vacuum cleaner with dust extraction accessories?
Sometimes, if the hose connection matches or you use an adapter, but it is not always advisable. Household vacuums clog quickly with fine building dust, and their filters are not designed for harmful dust. For short jobs with wood it may do, but for concrete and masonry a workshop vacuum is the better option.
