How to choose a drill bit or core bit
Shank type. Check which chuck your tool has before anything else. Most bits in our range have an SDS Plus shank, and there are also cylindrical, hex, SDS Max and SDS-Quick shanks. SDS Max is meant for heavier rotary hammers, while a cylindrical shank fits a drill with a standard chuck.
Material you are drilling. Concrete and masonry need a bit with a carbide tip, metal calls for high-speed steel (HSS) bits, and wood is best drilled with a bit that has a centring point. The wrong material blunts a bit quickly and leaves a ragged hole.
Type of tool. Our range is split almost evenly between bits for rotary hammers and bits for ordinary drills, and some suit both. A rotary hammer needs SDS bits, because the shank lets the hammer action pass through without slipping in the chuck. If you only own a drill, choose a cylindrical shank.
Diameter and length. Choose the diameter to match the plug or screw that will go into the hole. Hole depth depends on the working length rather than the overall length, so pick a longer bit for a thick wall. Core bits are chosen by the hole size you need, for example for a socket box or a pipe.
Set or single bit. A set helps when the jobs vary and you need several sizes. If you drill the same diameter often, a few single bits make more sense, since they wear out faster than those used rarely.

What is an SDS Plus shank?
An SDS Plus shank is a drill bit shank made for rotary hammers with an SDS Plus chuck. The bit slides in without a key and moves slightly along its axis, so the hammer blow reaches the concrete efficiently. It is the most common shank type in our range.
What is the difference between SDS Plus and SDS Max?
SDS Max has a thicker shank and is made for heavier rotary hammers, larger holes, deeper drilling and chiselling in concrete. SDS Plus suits lighter hammers and typical household jobs. The two are not interchangeable, because the chucks are different.
Which drill bit should I use for concrete?
Use a bit with a carbide tip, and for a rotary hammer choose an SDS bit. Small holes in brick or block can sometimes be drilled with a cylindrical shank bit and a hammer drill. Reinforced concrete needs a good-quality bit, since steel rebar quickly wears down a weak tip.
Can I use an SDS bit in an ordinary drill?
Usually not, because an SDS shank does not fit a standard keyed or keyless chuck. You need a rotary hammer with an SDS chuck, or a special adapter. If you only have a drill, buy bits with a cylindrical shank.
