Disposable batteries

This category covers single-use (non-rechargeable) batteries for remote controls, clocks, torches, toys and other devices that only need a simple power source.

Our range includes over 600 products, with manufacturers such as VARTA, ENERGIZER, ANSMANN, GP Batteries and DURACELL.

How to choose single-use batteries

Size and designation. Start by identifying the type your device needs: AA, AAA, C, D, 9V or a button cell such as the CR2032. It is printed in the device manual or on the old battery. Similar sizes differ by only a few millimetres, so the wrong one may not fit or may make poor contact.

Chemistry. Alkaline batteries suit most household devices, such as remotes, clocks and toys. Lithium AA and AAA batteries are lighter, cope better with cold and keep their charge longer in storage, so they are worth choosing for outdoor sensors or torches. Zinc-carbon cells are cheaper but only suit very light loads.

Power demand. Digital cameras, game controllers and bright torches drain weaker batteries quickly. For these, choose higher-grade alkaline or lithium batteries, while a wall clock or TV remote will run happily on ordinary alkaline cells.

Pack size and expiry date. A larger pack makes sense for devices used often, while a smaller one is better for occasional use, as batteries slowly lose energy over time. If you are stocking up, check the expiry date on the pack: alkaline and lithium batteries usually last several years on the shelf.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between alkaline and lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries are generally lighter, work better in the cold and keep their charge longer in storage, but they cost more. Alkaline batteries suit most everyday devices, such as remotes, clocks and toys. For a power-hungry or outdoor device, lithium is usually the better choice.

Can single-use batteries be recharged?

No, single-use batteries should never be recharged. Trying to do so can make them leak, overheat or even burst. If you use a device constantly, choose rechargeable cells and a suitable charger instead.

How should I store batteries so they last?

Store batteries in a dry place at room temperature, in their original pack or a plastic box. Keep them away from metal objects so the contacts cannot short-circuit. Do not mix old and new batteries, or different brands, in the same device.

Where do I dispose of used batteries?

Used batteries must not go in the household waste bin. Take them to a battery collection box, which are usually found in shops and at recycling sites. This keeps harmful substances out of the environment and allows some of the materials to be recycled.
