How to choose a cordless drill-driver
Battery voltage. 12 V tools are lighter, which suits furniture assembly, hanging shelves and small screws. 18 V models have more power for thick timber and longer jobs. Our range also includes 10.8 V and 3.6 V tools, but the main choice is between 12 V and 18 V. If you already own tools from one maker, stay with the same battery system, since one battery can power several tools.
Torque and gears. Clutch settings limit the turning force, so a screw does not sink too deep or lose its head. Many models in our range have 20 or more settings. Two gears are the usual arrangement: low gear for screws and large bits, high gear for small bits.
Chuck. A keyless chuck is tightened by hand, so you can change a bit in a few seconds. Most models in our range have one. A keyed chuck usually grips the bit more firmly, but you need the key to open it.
Drilling capacity. The maximum drilling diameter listed for models in our range runs from 1.9 to 4 cm in wood and from 8 mm to 1.3 cm in steel. Smaller values cover assembly and repairs, while thick beams or steel profiles call for a larger capacity.
Motor and battery. A brushless motor wears less and uses energy more efficiently, so the battery lasts longer. Check the capacity (Ah) and what is in the box: two batteries and a charger let you keep working without a pause. A pistol grip body is the usual shape, as it is easy to hold and press.

What is the difference between a drill-driver and a hammer drill?
A drill-driver only rotates, so it is meant for wood, metal and screws. A hammer drill adds a striking mechanism for concrete and masonry. A plain drill-driver is usually not enough for drilling concrete.
