Corded drills

Corded drills

Corded drills are made for DIY enthusiasts, joiners, builders and metalworkers who want steady power from the mains without worrying about battery charge. Our range has over 100 models, from basic home-use drills to tools aimed at professionals, from BOSCH, MAKITA, FEIN, KWB and other manufacturers.

How to choose a corded drill

Power. For home jobs such as hanging shelves or assembling furniture, a few hundred watts is usually enough. If you regularly drill thick timber, steel or masonry, choose a higher-rated model: it runs cooler and copes better with long sessions.

Hammer function. Hammer mode is needed for bricks, blocks and light concrete, and it is switched off for wood and metal. For very hard concrete, a rotary hammer is usually the better tool than a drill.

Chuck size. Most corded drills have a 10 mm or 13 mm chuck, and the figure is the largest bit shank it accepts. A keyless chuck changes bits without a key, while a keyed chuck holds large bits more firmly.

Speed control. A variable-speed trigger and reverse are essential: slow speed suits metal and large bits, fast speed suits wood and small diameters. Two-gear models widen that range further.

Weight and cable. A lighter drill is less tiring when you work overhead or hold it for long periods. Check the cable length too, as you will need an extension lead if the socket is far from the work area.

Frequently asked questions

How does a corded drill differ from a cordless one?

A corded drill runs straight from the mains, so power does not drop off and there is no battery to charge. It suits longer jobs in a workshop or at home, where a socket is nearby. The drawback is that the cable limits how far you can move.

Can a corded drill go through concrete?

Yes, if it has a hammer function and you use masonry bits with a carbide tip. That is fine for a few holes, but for larger jobs a rotary hammer is a better choice because it drills faster and is less tiring to use.

What chuck size should I choose?

A 10 mm chuck is usually enough for home jobs. If you plan to use thicker bits for wood or metal, choose a 13 mm chuck, since it accepts a larger shank diameter.

How many watts does a drill need for home use?

For home jobs such as putting up shelves or curtain poles, a few hundred watts is normally enough. For frequent drilling into concrete, thick steel or large-diameter holes, choose a higher-rated model that will not overheat during longer work.
