The pump moves coolant between the CPU or graphics card water block and the radiator, so it largely decides how stable and how quiet the whole loop is.
How to choose a liquid cooling pump
Pump type. Custom loops mostly use D5 or DDC pumps. A D5 is generally quieter and moves more coolant, while a DDC is smaller and builds more pressure, but its hum is usually easier to hear.
Flow and pressure. More water blocks, radiators and bends mean more resistance in the loop, so a long loop with several radiators calls for a pump that generates higher pressure. A simple loop with a CPU block and one radiator runs well at moderate speed, which also keeps noise down.
Standalone pump or pump-reservoir unit. A pump-reservoir unit takes up less room in the case and makes filling easier. Choose a standalone pump if you want to place parts freely or replace only the pump later. Such a pump often needs a separate top or mounting bracket.
Speed control. A pump with a PWM cable connects to a motherboard header, so its speed can follow temperature. Some pumps are controlled over USB or through a separate controller, which is useful if you want to monitor flow and coolant temperature.
Fittings and mounting. Most loop components use a G1/4 thread, so check that the pump ports match your fittings. Rubber mounts or a mounting plate reduce the vibration that would otherwise travel into the case.

Frequently asked questions about liquid cooling pumps
What is the difference between a D5 and a DDC pump?
A D5 pump is generally quieter and moves more coolant, while a DDC pump is smaller and builds more pressure. A DDC suits tight builds and loops with high resistance, and a D5 is more often chosen by those who put silence first.
Does liquid cooling always need a separate pump?
A separate pump is only needed for a custom loop assembled from individual parts. All-in-one liquid coolers, known as AIOs, have a pump built in, so there is nothing extra to buy.
Can a pump run without liquid?
No, a pump must never run dry. D5 and DDC pumps are cooled and lubricated by the coolant itself, so even a short dry run can damage the rotor bearings. Fill the loop and bleed out the air before the first start.
How do I connect a pump to my PC?
Most pumps get power through a SATA or Molex connector, while the PWM and speed signal cable goes to a fan or pump header on the motherboard. Some models take power directly from the motherboard. Always check the wiring in the manufacturer's manual.
