Laptop backpacks

This category covers laptop backpacks: mostly classic backpacks with a padded laptop compartment, plus a few briefcases and a wheeled case. They suit schoolchildren, students, office workers and travellers who carry a laptop together with documents. Our range includes over 650 models, with brands such as Dicota, Rivacase, Targus, Lenovo and Thule.

How to choose a laptop backpack

Right size. Start with the screen size the backpack is made for. Our range includes models for 15.6, 16, 17, 17.3 and 18 inch laptops, and the stated size is the largest the compartment takes. If your laptop is thick or has wide bezels, choose a size up and check the compartment dimensions.

Protection. A padded laptop compartment, a raised base and a firm back panel reduce the risk of damage when the backpack is dropped or set down on a hard floor. A separate pocket for a tablet or papers keeps them from rubbing against the laptop screen.

Comfort and capacity. For a daily commute to work or university, 15 to 25 litres is often enough. If you carry the bag for long stretches, look for wide padded straps, a chest strap and a ventilated back panel, because a laptop's weight is felt quickly on the shoulders.

Compatibility. Many backpacks in our range are listed as universal or suitable for any laptop brand, while some are made for Dell, Lenovo, ASUS or HP models. The dimensions matter more than the logo on the bag.

Material and use. For city use, water-repellent fabric and zips that can be locked or hidden are handy. Most backpacks are black, but there are also grey, blue and green ones, and a darker colour shows dirt less.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a backpack for a 15.6 inch laptop?

Choose a backpack whose laptop compartment is rated for at least a 15.6 inch screen. Check that the compartment is padded, the base is raised and the zip closes without a struggle. If your laptop is thick, pick a model with some spare room.

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in a 15.6 inch backpack?

Usually not, or only very tightly. A 16 inch laptop is typically a little wider and longer than a 15.6 inch one, so it is safer to choose a backpack rated for 16 inches or larger.

Can a Dell or Lenovo backpack be used for other laptop brands?

Yes, as long as the laptop fits the compartment. The brand named in the description shows which models the bag was sized for, but there is normally no physical restriction. Universal backpacks are made to suit laptops from any brand.

What is the best backpack for a daily commute?

A medium-sized backpack of 15 to 25 litres with a padded laptop compartment and soft straps usually works best. If you walk or cycle in the rain, choose water-repellent fabric. A lockable zip is useful on crowded public transport.
