Compressors and pneumatic tools

Compressors and pneumatic tools

This category covers air compressors and pneumatic tools for garages, workshops and home repairs. Our range includes over 290 products, with AEROTEC, EINHELL, KS TOOLS and METABO among the leading brands.

Whether you are inflating tyres, running a spray gun or powering an impact wrench, the key is to match the compressor's output to the air consumption of the tool.

How to choose a compressor and pneumatic tools

Air delivery. This is the most important figure: the volume of air supplied in litres per minute decides which tools a compressor can run. Tyre inflation and a blow gun need very little, while spray guns, sanders and impact wrenches use considerably more. Compare the tool's consumption with the compressor's output and leave a small margin.

Working pressure. Most pneumatic tools need around 6 bar at the tool, so the compressor's maximum pressure should sit a little above that. A higher maximum pressure also means more air is stored in the tank, so the motor has to start less often.

Tank size. A larger tank stores more compressed air, so you can work for longer between motor starts. A small tank is fine for short jobs such as inflating tyres, but it empties quickly when painting or sanding. Bigger compressors are heavier and need more space, so think about where you will keep one.

Oil-lubricated or oil-free. Oil-free models need no oil changes and deliver cleaner air, but they are usually louder. Oil-lubricated compressors tend to run more quietly and suit longer sessions, though they need the oil level checked and changed periodically.

Power supply and noise. Smaller compressors run from a standard 230 V socket, while more powerful workshop models sometimes need a three-phase 400 V connection. If you work close to living areas, check the noise level stated by the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

What compressor do I need to inflate tyres?

A small compressor with a small tank is enough for inflating tyres, because only a little air is needed for a short time. Make sure its maximum pressure is above the pressure your tyres require, and use an inflation fitting with a pressure gauge.

Can I use a compressor with a spray gun?

Yes, but only if the compressor's air delivery matches the spray gun's air consumption. Spray guns use more air than blow guns or inflation fittings, so with an undersized compressor the pressure drops and the paint finish comes out uneven.

Which pneumatic tools can I connect to a compressor?

You can connect impact wrenches, blow guns, spray guns, sanders, riveters and staple guns. Before buying, check how much air the tool consumes and what pressure it needs, and make sure you have a suitable hose and quick couplings.

What maintenance does a compressor need?

A compressor needs its tank drained of condensate regularly so the inside does not rust. It is also worth checking the air filter, and on oil-lubricated models, keeping an eye on the oil level and changing it as the manufacturer recommends.
