USB adapters and converters

USB adapters and converters link devices with different standards and connectors: USB-A to USB-C adapters, video converters to HDMI or DisplayPort, network adapters, serial (RS-232) converters and drive connectors. Our range includes over 1,400 models, with brands such as Delock, InLine, EXSYS and StarTech.com.

How to choose a USB adapter or converter

Connector type. Start by checking which connectors you need at each end: USB-A, USB-C, Micro-USB, Mini-USB or USB-B, and whether each end should be a plug (male) or a socket (female). An adapter with a plug and a socket extends or redirects a port, while a converter with a short cable helps when you need extra reach.

USB standard and speed. USB 2.0 reaches 480 Mbit/s, USB 3.2 Gen 1 (formerly USB 3.0) up to 5 Gbit/s and USB 3.2 Gen 2 up to 10 Gbit/s. For an external SSD or drive, choose at least USB 3.x, whereas a mouse or keyboard works perfectly well on USB 2.0. The slowest link in the chain sets the final speed: the computer port, the adapter or the device.

Purpose. With video converters (USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA), the USB-C port on your computer must support video output, and the converter must handle the resolution you want, such as 4K at 60 Hz. Network adapters differ in speed (100 Mbit/s, 1 Gbit/s or more), and RS-232 converters are needed for industrial equipment, controllers and older devices.

Power and compatibility. Some drive connectors, especially for 3.5-inch disks, need a separate power supply. Serial and network converters depend on chipset drivers, so check that your operating system, such as Windows 11 or macOS, is listed as supported before you buy.

Shape and length. A small adapter that plugs straight into the port takes little space, but on a laptop it can block the neighbouring port. A converter with a short cable puts less strain on the port and is more convenient when other devices are connected nearby.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a USB adapter and a USB converter?

An adapter usually just changes the shape of the connector, for example from USB-A to USB-C. A converter changes the type of signal or interface, for example from USB to Ethernet, HDMI or RS-232. In everyday use the two terms are often interchangeable, so go by the function described.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work with any laptop?

No, the USB-C port on the computer must support video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt). Some USB-C ports are meant only for data and charging. You can check this in the device specification or in the marking next to the port.

Will a USB 3.0 adapter work in a USB 2.0 port?

Yes, it will work, because USB standards are backwards compatible. The speed is limited by the slower standard, which is 480 Mbit/s. If you connect an external drive, transfers will take much longer than in a USB 3.x port.

How do I connect an old RS-232 device to a new computer?

Use a USB to RS-232 converter, which appears on the computer as a virtual COM port. Before buying, check that the chipset drivers support your operating system and that the connector matches the device plug or socket, which is usually DB9.
