Card readers let you copy photos, videos and files from SD, microSD and other memory cards to a computer. Our range has more than 150 models, mostly external USB readers plus a few internal ones that fit inside a PC case. The brands we stock most are Delock, Transcend, Hama and StarTech.com.
How to choose a card reader
Card formats. Start with the cards you actually use: SD and microSD are common in cameras, phones and action cameras, while more specialist equipment sometimes needs CompactFlash or other formats. A reader with several slots is handy if your cards differ, but a simple single-format model is enough if they do not.
Connection. Our range includes readers with USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C and USB 2.0 connectors, and a few with USB/Micro-USB. Type-C suits newer laptops and tablets, while Type-A works with most desktop PCs and older laptops.
Speed. USB 2.0 readers transfer data at up to 480 Mbit/s, USB 3.2 Gen 1 models at up to 5000 Mbit/s, and a few reach 10000 Mbit/s. If you regularly copy 4K video or RAW photos, a faster reader saves a lot of time, but the card limits the result too: a UHS-II card only reaches its full speed in a UHS-II reader.
External or internal. An external reader plugs in over USB and travels with your camera or laptop. An internal reader is fitted in the PC case, so you need free space and a suitable connector on the motherboard, but your external USB ports stay free.

Card reader FAQ
What is the difference between a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.2 card reader?
The difference is the maximum transfer speed. USB 2.0 reaches up to 480 Mbit/s and USB 3.2 Gen 1 up to 5000 Mbit/s, so large files copy much faster. The real speed is also limited by the slowest link in the chain, so the card and the computer's port matter as well.
Can a card reader read microSD cards?
Yes, if it has a microSD slot or you use a microSD to SD adapter. Check the supported formats in the product description before buying, because the simplest models handle only one card type.
Does a card reader need drivers?
Most modern USB card readers work without separate drivers, as operating systems such as Windows and macOS recognise them as soon as they are plugged in. Drivers are only occasionally needed for specialist models or very old systems, so it is worth checking the compatibility the manufacturer lists.
Can I connect a card reader to a phone?
Yes, provided the phone supports USB OTG and has a matching port. Newer phones need a reader with USB Type-C, and our range also includes models with USB/Micro-USB for older devices. Check first that your phone recognises connected devices.
