Case buttons and switches

Case buttons and switches

This category contains case power and reset buttons and switches, suited to replacing a faulty factory button, fitting a test bench or finishing a custom-built case. DIMASTECH and LAMPTRON account for most of the models, and there is one IMPACTICS product as well. In total there are over 10 models.

How to choose a case button or switch

Purpose. A power button turns the computer on and off, while a reset button restarts it. A test bench without a front panel needs at least a power button, whereas in a normal case you are usually replacing a worn or broken original.

How it switches. A PC power button is normally momentary: it only closes two contacts for as long as you press it. A latching switch that stays pressed is generally not suitable for the motherboard front panel pins.

Connector and cable length. The button connects to the motherboard front panel header, so check that the cable ends in a suitable connector. In a large case, or on a bench where the motherboard sits further away, cable length can matter more than the button itself.

Mounting hole. The button is fixed into a hole in the case panel. Measure the hole diameter and consider the panel thickness before buying, because these decide whether the nut will tighten firmly.

Lighting and appearance. Some buttons have an LED that shows the computer is running. If it is powered separately from the switch contacts, it needs an extra connection, so read the description to see how the light is wired.

Brands we carry

  • DIMASTECH: known for open-frame test benches, where components are tested without a case, so its buttons suit benches with no front panel. This brand makes up most of the products in this category.
  • LAMPTRON: known for fan and lighting controllers and other PC modding accessories.

Also in our range: IMPACTICS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect a power button to the motherboard?

The button wires go onto the front panel header pins, usually labelled PWR SW or similar. A power button has no polarity, but the LED wires must be connected the right way round. The exact pin layout is shown in the motherboard manual.

Can I turn on a PC without a power button?

Yes, you can briefly bridge the two PWR SW pins, for example with a screwdriver tip. Fitting a separate button is easier and safer, especially for a PC on a test bench. Switch off the power supply first and take care.

What is the difference between a power button and a reset button?

A power button switches the computer on or, with a normal press, shuts it down, while a reset button restarts the system immediately. The operating system has no time to close properly after a reset, so unsaved data can be lost.

Will one button fit any case?

Not always. Most buttons connect to the motherboard in a similar way, but the mounting hole diameter, panel thickness and cable length differ. Measure the opening in your case or bench before buying.
