Card readers

Card readers let you move photos, videos and other files from memory cards to a computer, tablet or phone. This category has over 30 readers and adapters for SD, microSD and other cards. Brands include Conceptronic, Samsung, Delock and SanDisk.

How to choose a card reader

Card format. Start with the cards you actually use: SD, microSD, CompactFlash or others. Cameras mostly use SD, while phones and action cameras use microSD. If you have several card types, a multi-format reader is more practical.

Connector. A reader with USB-C suits newer laptops and phones, while USB-A is needed for older computers and desktop setups. The ports on your device will usually decide this for you.

Speed. A reader with a USB 3.0 or faster interface copies large video files much quicker than a USB 2.0 model, which holds back even a fast card. If you own a UHS-II SD card, you need a reader that supports that standard. With a UHS-I reader the card will still work, only more slowly.

Type of reader. A small reader or adapter fits in a camera bag and is handy for travel. A multi-slot model suits an office or studio where several card types are swapped regularly.

Operating temperature. At home or in an office it hardly matters, but for equipment used outdoors, in industry or in vehicles it can decide the purchase. Our range includes models rated for 0 to 45 °C and 0 to 70 °C, and some work from -25 to 85 °C.

Brands we carry

  • Conceptronic: known for affordable computer accessories, and it has the most products in this category.
  • Samsung: well known for memory cards and SSDs, so its readers pair naturally with the same maker's cards.
  • SanDisk, Transcend: memory card and portable storage makers whose cards are widely used in cameras and phones.
  • Goodram, PNY Electronics: producers of memory cards and USB flash drives, offering simple readers to go with their cards.
  • Sony: a camera maker whose memory cards are also aimed at professional photography and video.
  • Delock, LogiLink, Lindy: specialists in computer connectivity, cables and adapters, so their readers often come with more than one connector.

You will also find products from Equip and Contour.

Frequently asked questions

What reader do I need for a microSD card?

You need a reader with a microSD slot, or a multi-format model that covers microSD. If you only have an SD slot, a microSD adapter will do, and one often comes with the card itself. Also choose a connector that matches your computer or phone.

Can a slow reader hold back a fast card?

Yes, a card cannot work faster than the reader or its USB interface allows. A USB 2.0 model limits transfer speed even when the card is quicker. For large files, choose a USB 3.0 or faster reader.

Can I connect a card reader to a phone?

Often you can, provided the phone supports external devices (OTG) and has a suitable port. Most current phones need a reader with USB-C or an adapter. Check your phone's specification before buying.

Why does my computer not detect the memory card?

The usual causes are a card that is not fully inserted, dirty contacts, or a faulty USB port. Try another port or another reader. If the card is still not detected, it may be damaged or need formatting, so copy off any important files first if you can.
