Capsule and pod coffee machines are for people who want espresso, cappuccino or black coffee in a couple of minutes, with no grinder and no grounds to clear up. How to choose a capsule or pod coffee machine
Capsule system. A machine usually works with only one capsule or pod format, so choose the system first and the model second. In our range most machines take capsules and some take pods. Check where your favourite capsules are sold and in what quantities, because over time they become the main coffee expense.
Machine type. A capsule machine makes one cup with no preparation, an espresso machine is aimed at stronger coffee with crema, and a drip machine suits situations where you need more coffee at once. Our range includes all of these, though capsule machines make up the largest group. If espresso flavour matters most, look at the pump pressure stated by the manufacturer.
Water tank. Tank capacity in our range mostly runs from 0.56 to 1 L. About 0.6 or 0.7 L is enough for one person, while a household or office is better served by 0.9 or 1 L, so the tank does not need refilling several times a day.
Controls and power. Most models have buttons, quite a few have touch controls, and some use a rotary dial or a lever. Power in our range mostly falls between 1260 and 1600 W. Higher power helps heat the water faster, but the taste in the cup also depends on pressure and the quality of the capsule.
Maintenance. Choose a machine with a removable drip tray and an easily accessible water tank, since these are what you will wash most often. All such machines need descaling from time to time, so check whether the manufacturer describes a descaling programme and recommends suitable products.

What is the difference between a capsule and a pod coffee machine?
A capsule machine uses a hard plastic or aluminium capsule, while a pod machine uses a soft paper pod of ground coffee. Pods are usually flat and inexpensive, whereas capsule systems are more numerous and offer a greater choice of flavours. In both cases you make the coffee by pressing a button.
Do capsules fit any machine?
No, capsules fit only the system they were made for. Nespresso, Nescafé Dolce Gusto and Tassimo capsules are not interchangeable. Check the capsule type in the machine description before buying, or choose a model that accepts several formats.
What size of water tank do I need?
For one or two people a tank of 0.6 to 0.8 L is enough for several cups. A household or office is better off with about 1 L, as you will refill less often. Water should not stand in the tank for long, so avoid filling more than you will use in a day or two.
How often does a capsule coffee machine need descaling?
It depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the machine, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. Descaling is usually needed every few months, and more often with hard water. Wash the drip tray and water tank regularly, every few days.
