Camera filters

Camera and video camera filters: UV and protection filters, circular polarising (CPL) filters, neutral density (ND) filters and filter sets. They suit photographers, video makers and drone users. Our range has over 170 products, and the leading brands are HAMA, FREEWELL, B+W and WALIMEX.

How to choose a lens filter

Filter size. The diameter must match the filter thread at the front of your lens, usually marked with the symbol Ø on the lens barrel or lens cap. Our range includes 52, 58, 62, 67, 72 and 77 mm filters. If you own several lenses, you can buy a larger filter and use step-up rings.

Filter type. UV and protection filters shield the front element from scratches, dust and raindrops. A CPL filter cuts reflections from water and glass and deepens the colour of the sky. An ND filter simply darkens the image, so on a bright day you can use a longer exposure or a wider aperture.

Glass quality and coatings. A good filter has multi-layer coatings that reduce reflections and flare when shooting towards the light. Poor filters can lower contrast or add a colour cast. For wide-angle lenses, choose a slim frame so the corners of the picture do not darken.

Mounting system. Most filters screw onto the lens thread, which is simple and inexpensive. If you swap filters often, for example while filming, magnetic or quick-change systems are more convenient.

Set or single filter. A UV or protection filter is enough to start with. If you plan to shoot landscapes or video, look at sets that bring several different filters in the same diameter.

Frequently asked questions about camera filters

Do I really need a UV filter?

On a digital camera a UV filter does almost nothing for image quality, because the sensor is already protected from ultraviolet light. It is still useful as an inexpensive protective glass that shields a costly front element from scratches and dust. Choose a good-quality filter so the image does not suffer.

What is the difference between CPL and ND filters?

A CPL filter reduces reflections and deepens colours, and its effect depends on how you rotate it. An ND filter just reduces the amount of light entering the lens and does not change colours. It is used for long exposures or wide apertures in bright light.

How do I find out what filter size my lens needs?

The filter size is given in millimetres on the lens barrel or lens cap, for example Ø67. You will also find it in the lens specification. Buy a filter of exactly that diameter, or use a step-up ring.

Can I stack several filters on one lens?

Yes, for example a CPL together with an ND, but every extra filter increases the risk of reflections and darkened corners. This is most noticeable on wide-angle lenses. In that case choose slim frames and avoid adding a UV filter on top.
