Business routers and gateways

This category contains business routers and gateways for offices, shops, branch sites and remote locations: wired routers with firewall and VPN functions, multi-WAN devices and 4G and 5G cellular routers. Our range has over 200 models, with MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Cradlepoint, TP-Link and LANCOM among the leading brands.

How to choose a business router

Internet connection type. Start with what the router has to connect to: fibre or cable through an Ethernet port, a fibre module through an SFP port, or a mobile network through a SIM card. If downtime is unacceptable, choose a model with two WAN connections or a cellular backup, so traffic switches over when the main line fails.

Throughput with security enabled. The headline speed quoted by a manufacturer is usually measured with plain routing. Once the firewall, VPN encryption or traffic inspection is switched on, real throughput is often much lower, so compare the figures for the features you will actually use.

VPN and remote access. Count how many staff or branch sites will connect and which protocols you need, such as IPsec, WireGuard or OpenVPN. Supported protocols differ between devices, and smaller models limit the number of tunnels that can run at the same time.

Management and ports. A single router in a small shop is easy to set up through a web page, but several sites are far simpler to run from a cloud portal or central controller. Also check the number of LAN ports, whether you need PoE to power access points or cameras, and whether the device sits on a desk or is mounted in a rack.

Brands we carry

  • MikroTik: known for RouterOS, a flexible operating system with detailed routing, firewall and VPN settings, which suits administrators who want full control.
  • Ubiquiti: its UniFi and EdgeRouter lines are managed through a central controller, so routers, switches and access points can be run from one place.
  • Cradlepoint: specialises in 4G and 5G cellular routers and gateways, used for branch connectivity, mobile sites and backup links.
  • TP-Link: in its Omada system, VPN routers, switches and access points are managed through one cloud platform.
  • LANCOM: a German manufacturer known for its focus on network security and for devices managed through LANCOM Management Cloud.
  • DrayTek: Vigor routers are popular in small businesses for their multi-WAN and VPN features.
  • Cisco: a long-established enterprise networking vendor whose routers are common in larger company networks.
  • SonicWall: best known for network security products and firewalls.

Also in our range: Huawei, Grandstream Networks, Yeastar and Milesight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business router and a home router?

A business router is built for continuous operation, many simultaneous connections and features such as VPN, VLANs, multi-WAN and centralised management. Home routers usually concentrate on Wi-Fi and simple setup. Many business routers have no Wi-Fi at all, so separate access points are added.

Do I need a router with a SIM card slot?

You need a SIM slot if the site has no fixed line or you want a backup connection. A cellular router suits temporary sites, construction projects and branches where fibre has not yet been installed. For a main office it is usually used as a reserve link.

How many VPN tunnels does a business need?

As a rule, you need one tunnel for each branch site, plus separate connections for remote workers. Check the maximum number of tunnels stated by the manufacturer, and remember that encryption performance limits it too. A small office often needs only a few tunnels, while a network with many branches needs a stronger model.

Can a business router replace a firewall?

Many business routers include a stateful firewall, which is often enough for a small office. If you need intrusion prevention, content filtering or detailed traffic analysis, a separate security appliance or a model with those functions is the better route, and some of these features are licensed separately.
