Batteries and chargers

This category covers cordless power tool batteries and chargers for DIY users, tradespeople and gardeners. Most of our range comes from Makita, DeWalt, Bosch and Einhell, with Metabo, Fein and other makers alongside. There are over 70 products to choose from.

How to choose a tool battery and charger

Manufacturer system. The battery must match your tool's platform. Makita, DeWalt, Bosch and Einhell batteries generally work only with tools from the same maker's system, so check the system name and voltage on the tool or on the old battery before ordering.

Voltage. Most cordless hand tools run on 18 V batteries. Smaller tools often use 12 V, while garden machinery and larger tools such as chainsaws commonly use 36 V or more. Batteries of different voltages cannot be swapped unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

Capacity (Ah). Capacity is given in amp hours. A 2.0 Ah battery is lighter and suits short jobs such as driving screws, while a 5.0 Ah battery or larger runs for longer but weighs more. For a full day of drilling or cutting, the extra runtime matters more than the added weight.

Charger. A fast charger cuts downtime, especially if you own two batteries: one charges while you work with the other. Make sure the charger is made for your system's voltage and battery type, as some models only fit a single series.

Brands in our range

  • Makita: Japanese maker known for its 18 V LXT system, whose batteries fit a large number of hand and garden tools.
  • DeWalt: American brand offering 18 V XR batteries for trade users, plus the FlexVolt system for larger tools.
  • Bosch: German group with two separate lines: blue Professional for the trades and green for home DIY.
  • Einhell: known for its Power X-Change system, where one 18 V battery fits both workshop and garden tools.
  • Metabo: uses the Cordless Alliance System, shared with several other manufacturers, so batteries can fit tools from different brands.
  • Fein: German manufacturer regarded as the pioneer of oscillating multi-tools.
  • Dremel: known for small rotary tools used for engraving and sanding.
  • Stiga: specialises in garden machinery such as lawn mowers and trimmers.

Also in our range: Brennenstuhl, Synergy21, Batavia and Greencell.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Makita battery fit a Bosch tool?

Generally not, because each manufacturer uses its own connector and protection electronics. The exception is multi-brand platforms such as the Cordless Alliance System used by Metabo. Check that the system matches your tool before buying.

What battery capacity should I choose?

2.0 Ah is enough for light, short jobs, while long drilling, cutting or garden work is better served by 4.0 Ah or more. Higher capacity means longer runtime but also more weight. If you work a lot, it is worth owning two batteries.

Can I use a higher-capacity battery than the original?

Yes, provided it belongs to the same system and has the same voltage as the tool. The tool will run for longer, though its balance in the hand will change. Capacity does not affect compatibility.

How can I make a lithium-ion battery last longer?

Store it indoors where it is neither very hot nor very cold, and do not leave it fully discharged for long periods. If you will not use the tool for a while, leave the battery partly charged. Always use the charger made for your system.
