How to choose a lighting device
Purpose. For mood and everyday lighting at home, look at smart bulbs, LED strips or light panels. A torch or headlamp is more useful outdoors or in the dark, and a headlamp leaves your hands free. For a garage, workshop or building site, a work light with a mount or stand is the better fit.
Brightness and colour of light. Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts, so compare models by lumens. Warmer white light (around 2700 K) suits relaxing, while neutral or cooler white (from about 4000 K) works better for reading and tasks. Many smart bulbs let you change the shade, and some also produce coloured light.
Control and compatibility. Smart bulbs connect via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Zigbee, and some systems need a separate controller known as a bridge. Check that the product works with your app or voice assistant before buying. If you want a single app for everything, it is best not to mix systems from different manufacturers.
Bulb fitting. The cap must match your light fitting, and the most common types are E27, E14 and GU10. If the fitting has a dimmer, make sure the bulb supports it.
