How to choose an Android tablet

Screen. An 8-9 inch tablet is easy to hold in one hand and carry around, 10-11 inches suits films and studying, and 12 inches or more works better for handwriting and for using two windows side by side. Check the resolution and refresh rate: scrolling is smoother at 90 or 120 Hz, and AMOLED panels are mostly found in higher-end models.

Memory and storage. For browsing and video, 3-4 GB of RAM is usually enough, while several apps open at once and games call for 6 GB or more. 64 GB of storage fills up quickly, so check whether there is a microSD card slot, as not every model has one.

Connectivity. A Wi-Fi-only version is enough at home. If you will use the tablet on the move, choose a model with a SIM card slot (LTE or 5G) so you do not have to share data from your phone.

Updates and Google services. Find out how many years of security updates the manufacturer promises, because that decides how long the tablet stays safe to use. Newer HUAWEI devices run without Google Mobile Services, so some familiar apps have to be installed in a different way.

Battery and accessories. Judge battery capacity (mAh) together with screen size, not on its own. If you plan to write or draw, check that the model supports a stylus, and if you will type a lot, consider a keyboard case. Where the tablet might be dropped, a rugged model is the safer choice.

Yes, you can edit documents, read email, join video calls and take notes. It is most comfortable on a larger screen with a keyboard case. For demanding software that needs a full desktop operating system, a laptop is the better choice.
