This category covers extension leads, desk and furniture power blocks, and power distribution units (PDUs) for server racks. They suit home and office workstations, meeting rooms and IT equipment rooms. Our range includes over 80 models, mostly from BACHMANN, along with ROLINE, APC and CYBERPOWER.
How to choose an extension lead or power distribution unit
Number and layout of sockets. Count every device you will plug in now and leave at least a couple of sockets free for later. Plug-in power adapters often block the neighbouring socket, so for those choose a model with wider spacing between sockets.
Surge protection. A basic extension lead only adds sockets, while a model with surge protection absorbs part of a sudden voltage spike. A computer, monitor, network equipment and storage drives are all worth connecting to the second type.
Load and cable length. The maximum permitted current or power is marked on the product, and the combined power of the connected devices must stay below it. Pick the cable length according to the distance to the wall socket, so you never need to plug one extension lead into another.
Mounting method. Blocks made for desks, walls or furniture are fixed with screws or set into the desktop. A server cabinet needs a 19-inch PDU, so check its height (U), the socket type and the plug it uses to connect to the mains.
Brands in our range
- BACHMANN: known for extension leads, cable reels and socket blocks that can be built into desks and conference furniture.
- ROLINE: known for IT cables and connection accessories, and you will find some of its extension leads here too.
- APC and CYBERPOWER: both are best known for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and surge protection equipment.
- HP Enterprise and DIGITUS: the first makes servers and network equipment, the second is known for network cabling and rack accessories, so both suit IT rooms.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an extension lead and a PDU?
An extension lead is a cable with several sockets for homes and offices, while a power distribution unit (PDU) is usually mounted in a 19-inch cabinet and feeds servers and network equipment. PDU housings are generally sturdier, and some models also display the current load.
Can you plug an extension lead into another extension lead?
No, you should avoid it. The whole load passes through the first lead's cable and plug, which can overheat. A longer cable or a model with more sockets is the safer solution.
Does a computer need an extension lead with surge protection?
Yes, it is worth having. Computers, monitors and network devices are sensitive to sudden voltage spikes, for example during a storm or when the mains is switched. Surge protection does not replace a UPS, though, because it does not keep devices running during a power cut.
How many devices can you connect to one extension lead?
As many as keep their combined power below the maximum load stated on the lead. A computer, monitor and desk lamp are normally fine on an ordinary office extension lead, but a heater or kettle is better plugged straight into a wall socket.
