External SSD drives

External SSD drives

External SSDs are portable solid-state drives that connect to a laptop, desktop or other device by USB cable. They suit backups, moving large files and adding extra storage. Our range includes over 400 models from brands such as ADATA, Transcend, SanDisk, Verbatim and Samsung.

How to choose an external SSD

Interface and speed. The USB standard sets the ceiling for real-world speed. Our range includes models with USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2x2 and USB4, with read speeds from roughly 460 to 3800 MB/s and write speeds from 440 to 3700 MB/s. A slower port on your computer will hold back even a fast drive.

Connector and cable. Most models use a USB Type-C connector, but there are also Micro-USB B and USB Type-A versions. If your computer only has Type-A sockets, check that the box includes a suitable cable or adapter.

Capacity. Our range runs from 256 GB to 4 TB, with 1 TB and 2 TB models the most numerous. For photos and documents 1 TB is often enough, while video footage, a game library or backups from several computers call for 2 TB or more.

Build and operating conditions. An aluminium case helps carry heat away, while rubber or silicone cushions the drive if it is dropped. We stock aluminium, polycarbonate and plastic housings, and operating temperatures vary, for example from 0 to 40 °C or from -10 to 59 °C. If you will use the drive outdoors, choose a wider temperature range.

Frequently asked questions

Is an external SSD faster than an external hard drive?

Yes, usually by a wide margin. An SSD has no moving parts, so it reads and writes files faster and is less affected by knocks and vibration.

What capacity of external SSD should I buy?

For photos, documents and everyday backups, 500 GB or 1 TB is usually enough. Video projects and game libraries are better served by 2 TB or 4 TB. It is wise to leave some free space, as a nearly full drive slows down.

What is the difference between USB 3.2 Gen 2 and Gen 2x2?

Gen 2 has a theoretical limit of 10 Gbit/s, while Gen 2x2 reaches 20 Gbit/s. You will only see the benefit if your computer's port also supports Gen 2x2. Otherwise the drive will run at Gen 2 speed.

Can I connect an external SSD to a phone?

Yes, if the phone has a USB-C port and supports external storage, which depends on the model. You will need a drive with a USB Type-C connector or a suitable adapter. Some phones also need a file manager app to browse the files.
