How to choose a processor
Socket and motherboard. The processor must match the motherboard socket and chipset, for example AMD AM5 or Intel LGA1700. Even a board with the right socket may need a newer BIOS version, so check the motherboard maker's list of supported processors before buying.
Cores and purpose. Four or six cores are enough for office work, browsing and video streaming. Games benefit from high single-core speed, while video editing, 3D rendering and virtual machines make good use of more cores and threads.
Integrated graphics. Some processors include a graphics chip, so a separate graphics card is not needed. Intel models with an F in the name do not have one, and some AMD processors also lack integrated graphics, so without a graphics card you will get no picture.
Cooling and thermal paste. Some processors are sold with a cooler and others without, and models with a high thermal design power (TDP) usually need a separate cooler. Fitting a cooler requires thermal paste, and in an older system it is worth replacing once temperatures start to creep up.

Should I choose an AMD or an Intel processor?
Both makers offer good models for every purpose, so compare the specific processor rather than the brand. Look at core count, single-core speed, power consumption and the motherboard socket. The platform you choose also decides your later upgrade options.
How do I know if a processor will fit my motherboard?
Check that the socket matches, then look up the processor on the motherboard maker's support list, including the required BIOS version. The socket alone is not enough, as the chipset and BIOS also affect compatibility. If in doubt, confirm before ordering.
Do I need to replace thermal paste, and how often?
You should apply fresh thermal paste every time you remove the cooler from the processor. Otherwise, renew it when temperatures rise for no clear reason, usually after several years of use. Wipe off the old paste and spread a thin new layer.
Can I use a server processor in a normal PC?
Usually not, because server processors such as Xeon or EPYC use different sockets and often need special memory and server motherboards. They are made for servers and workstations. For a home PC, choose a desktop processor that fits your motherboard.
