How to choose a power supply unit
Wattage. Add up the power draw of the processor and graphics card, then leave some headroom so the unit is not running at its limit. The graphics card maker usually states a recommended PSU wattage, which is the best place to start. Check the connectors too: in our range the number of 4-pin Molex peripheral connectors varies from none to six.
Form factor. Most PC cases take a standard ATX unit, while small cases often need SFX or SFX-L. Some very small cases use Flex ATX or TFX units. Always confirm the form factor in the case specification, because mounting points and dimensions differ between formats.
80 PLUS certification. It shows how much of the power drawn from the socket is delivered to the components rather than lost as heat. A higher tier means less heat and slightly lower electricity use. Our range runs from 80 PLUS Bronze through Gold and Platinum to Titanium. Bronze is enough for an office PC, while Gold is often a sensible compromise for a gaming system that runs for many hours.
Cabling. With a fully modular unit you connect only the cables you need, which keeps the case tidier and helps airflow. Non-modular units tend to be simpler in design, but all cables are attached from the start. Semi-modular units have the main cables fixed and the extra ones detachable.
Cooling and noise. Most units use an active fan, but there are also semi-passive models, where the fan spins only under higher load, and fully passive ones. Passive units suit only low-power systems, and anyone building a quiet PC should look at semi-passive operation.

What wattage power supply does a PC need?
It needs enough wattage to cover the processor and graphics card with some headroom. An office PC without a separate graphics card needs a much lower-rated unit, while a gaming PC with a strong graphics card needs considerably more. The most reliable guide is the wattage recommended by the graphics card manufacturer.
Is a modular power supply worth it?

What does 80 PLUS Gold mean?
80 PLUS is a certification of a power supply's efficiency at different loads. The tiers run from Bronze up to Titanium, and Gold and above lose less energy as heat. It does not change the unit's wattage, but it reduces heat and electricity use.
Will any power supply fit any PC case?
