How to choose server memory
Memory generation. A server board accepts only one generation: DDR4 and DDR5 modules differ in both connector and operating voltage. Our range is mostly DDR4 (typically 1.2 V) and DDR5 (typically 1.1 V), with a few DDR3 modules for older systems.
Module type. Servers usually need registered memory (RDIMM) with ECC error correction, and many servers do not accept unbuffered (UDIMM) modules. Most modules in our range are registered, with some unbuffered and load-reduced (LRDIMM) options. Different module types should not be mixed in one server.
Capacity and layout. Single-module capacity in our range runs from 8 to 128 GB, with 16, 32 and 64 GB the most common. Memory works best when the modules fill the processor's memory channels evenly, so several smaller modules can sometimes be a better buy than one large one. Many listings are single modules, so you build the full set yourself.
Speed and compatibility. Speeds range from 2133 to 5600 MHz, and 3200 MHz is common among the DDR4 modules. The processor and server board set the real speed limit, and in a mixed set the modules normally run at the slowest one's speed. Before buying, check the server manufacturer's list of supported memory and the part number.

Frequently asked questions
How is server memory different from ordinary PC memory?
Server memory is usually registered with ECC, which corrects memory errors and allows more capacity than ordinary PC modules. Standard UDIMMs often will not work in servers built for RDIMMs, so always follow the server's documentation.
Can DDR4 and DDR5 memory be used together?
No, the two generations cannot be mixed. They differ in pin layout and operating voltage, so a DDR4 module does not fit a DDR5 slot and the other way round. Choose the generation your server board supports.
How much memory does a server need?
It depends on the workload: a file server may manage with a few dozen gigabytes, while virtualisation or databases need considerably more. Check current memory usage, leave some headroom and try to fill all memory channels. Our range includes modules from 8 to 128 GB.
Can I mix modules from different manufacturers?
Often yes, provided the generation, type, capacity and speed match, but identical modules are the safest choice. If the speeds differ, all the memory normally runs at the slowest module's speed. Some servers also insist on manufacturer-approved parts.
