How to choose an AM5 motherboard
Socket and processor support. Only processors with the AM5 socket will work in an AM5 board, so older AM4 processors will not fit. A small number of listings in this category show other sockets, so check the specification before you buy. It is also worth confirming that the manufacturer lists your exact processor, as some boards need a BIOS update first.
Chipset. Chipsets on the AM5 platform run from A620 to X870E. A620 covers simpler builds, B650 or B850 is usually enough for a gaming PC, and X670E and X870E offer more PCIe lanes and connectivity, which helps if you plan several fast M.2 drives or many add-in cards.
Form factor. ATX boards generally offer the most expansion slots and four memory slots. Micro ATX fits smaller cases but has fewer slots, while mini ITX is meant for the smallest cases and often has only two memory slots. Our range includes ATX, micro ATX, mini ITX and Extended ATX boards, so start by checking which size your case supports.
Memory. AM5 boards work only with DDR5 memory, and DDR4 modules cannot be used. Many models have four memory slots and some have two. The maximum supported memory in our range runs from 64 GB to 256 GB, so if you work with very large projects, look for a board that supports 192 GB or 256 GB.
Video output and connections. Many boards have a single HDMI port, but some have none at all. If you do not plan to fit a separate graphics card, you need both a board with a video output and a processor with integrated graphics. Also check the number of M.2 slots and USB connections, as they are hard to add later.

Which processors fit an AM5 motherboard?
AM5 motherboards take AMD Ryzen processors with the AM5 socket, for example the Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series. AM4 processors do not fit, because the sockets are different. Some newer processors may need a more recent BIOS version.
Does an AM5 motherboard support DDR4 memory?
No, AM5 motherboards work only with DDR5 memory. DDR4 modules do not fit the slot and are not compatible. Moving to AM5 therefore also means buying new memory.
Do I need a separate graphics card with an AM5 PC?
Not always. Most newer Ryzen processors include basic integrated graphics, but not all, so check the specification of the exact model. To use integrated graphics you also need a motherboard with an HDMI or other video port.
Should I choose an ATX or a micro ATX motherboard?
Choose ATX if you want more PCIe and M.2 slots and room to expand. Micro ATX is enough for most gaming PCs with one graphics card and a few drives, and it fits smaller cases too. The main thing is that the form factor matches your case.
