AM4 motherboards are built for PCs with AMD Ryzen processors and DDR4 memory. Our range has over 90 models, including micro ATX and ATX boards as well as mini ITX and Mini DTX versions. GIGABYTE, ASUS, ASRock and MSI offer the most choice.
How to choose an AM4 motherboard
Processor compatibility. The AM4 socket has been used for several Ryzen generations, but not every board recognises a newer processor straight out of the box. Before buying, check the manufacturer's list of supported processors and the BIOS version required, especially if you plan to pair an older chipset with a Ryzen 5000 series processor.
Chipset. A320 boards are more basic and do not support processor overclocking, B450 and B550 suit most home and gaming PCs, and X570 offers the most expansion and the fastest PCI Express connections. If you are building an office PC and will not overclock, a more expensive chipset is unnecessary.
Form factor. Most boards in our range are micro ATX or ATX, with a few mini ITX and Mini DTX models. The form factor must match your case: an ATX board will not fit a small micro ATX case, while a micro ATX board fits a larger case but has fewer expansion slots.
Memory. Most boards have four DDR4 slots and some have only two. Two-slot boards are usually simpler and enough for most PCs, but upgrading later is harder. Check the maximum supported capacity and memory speed.
Connectors and video output. The HDMI output only works with processors that have integrated graphics, so it is not needed if you will use a separate graphics card. Many boards have four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, while faster USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports number one or two, and some boards have none. Also look at how many M.2 slots are provided for NVMe SSDs.
Brands we carry
- GIGABYTE: has the most AM4 boards in our range, and its gaming-oriented Aorus series is known for sturdy power delivery design.
- ASUS: makes the ROG and TUF Gaming board families, aimed at gaming PCs and overclocking.
- ASRock: known for its Steel Legend and Phantom Gaming series, which offer plenty of features at mid-range prices.
- MSI: its mid-range MAG Mortar and Tomahawk lines stand out for their attention to cooling and power delivery.
- AMD: the creator of the AM4 platform and Ryzen processors, so its name marks the platform itself.
Also in our range: BIOSTAR and SAPPHIRE boards.
Frequently asked questions about AM4 motherboards
Will DDR5 memory work in an AM4 motherboard?
No, AM4 motherboards support DDR4 memory only. DDR5 is supported by newer AMD platforms with a different processor socket, so DDR5 modules cannot be used in an AM4 board.
What is the difference between B450 and B550?
B550 is the newer chipset and, with a suitable processor, provides PCI Express 4.0 for the graphics card and a fast NVMe SSD. B450 uses the slower PCI Express 3.0 standard, which is still enough for most PCs and games. Check the specification of the exact model before choosing.
Do I need a separate graphics card with an AM4 motherboard?
It depends on the processor. If the processor has integrated graphics, the picture can be sent through the board's HDMI port. Processors without integrated graphics will not output video without a separate graphics card, even if the board has an HDMI port.
Will a Ryzen 5000 processor work on an older AM4 board?
Often yes, but only if the board maker supports that exact processor and a suitable BIOS version is installed. This matters most with A320, B350 and X370 boards. Check the supported processor list on the manufacturer's website before buying.
