How to choose PC case accessories
Fit with your case. Start with the drive bays your case has: 3.5-inch, 5.25-inch or only 2.5-inch for storage. Most frames, adapters and card readers are made for one specific bay size, so check the dimensions before ordering.
Motherboard headers. Internal USB connections need a matching header on the board: USB 2.0 uses a 9-pin header, USB 3.0 a 19-pin one, and a front panel USB-C port usually needs a 20-pin header. SATA and M.2 work the same way, so check your motherboard manual first.
Cable length and quality. In a large case a cable that is too short will not reach the bottom of the board, while one that is too long bunches up and blocks airflow. For fast signals, shielded cables with firm connectors are the safer choice.
Mounting and materials. Metal frames are stiffer and carry heat away from a drive better, while plastic ones are lighter. If you swap drives often, a removable tray is easier than a frame fixed with screws.

What is the difference between 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive mounting frames?
The difference is the size of the drive each one holds. A 3.5-inch frame carries a desktop hard drive, while a 2.5-inch frame is for SSDs and laptop drives. Adapter frames also exist that let a 2.5-inch drive sit in a 3.5-inch bay.
How do I connect a front panel USB-C port to the motherboard?
The motherboard needs an internal USB-C header, usually a 20-pin one. A USB 3.0 header (19 pins) has a different shape, so the cable cannot be plugged in directly. Check your board's specification before buying.
Will a card reader fit any PC case?
No, it needs a free bay of the size the reader is made for, usually 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch. The motherboard must also have a spare internal USB header. The connector on the reader has to match the standard your board offers.
What are slot brackets used for?
A slot bracket moves a connector from a motherboard header to the rear panel of the case. It gives you an extra USB, COM or SATA port at the back. The bracket takes up one free expansion card slot in the case.
