How to choose a server rack
Height (U). One U is 44.45 mm of vertical mounting space. Add up your servers, switches, patch panels, cable organisers and power distribution unit, then leave free slots for growth. Small network kit often fits in 6U or 9U, servers and a few shelves are better suited to 22U and above, and full-size racks usually reach 42U.
Depth and width. Standard equipment mounts in a 19-inch (482.6 mm) frame, so the external width of a rack is most often 600 mm or 800 mm. Choose the depth by your deepest device: switches need less, while servers often call for 800 mm or more, since cables must also fit behind the rear panel.
Wall-mounted or floor-standing. A wall-mounted cabinet suits a small office or a room without a separate server area, but it is limited in depth and weight, and the wall must carry the load. A floor-standing rack takes heavier equipment, a UPS and more cabling, and can be reached from both sides.
Load capacity. The manufacturer states a maximum load in kilograms, and it differs considerably between wall-mounted and floor-standing models. Add up the weight of the servers, UPS and shelves. Heavy servers also need suitable rails or shelves.
Ventilation and doors. Perforated front doors let more air through than glass ones, so they suit equipment that runs hot. Glass doors are handy if you want to see status lights, and a rack in a small room benefits from a fan module and a lock. Among models with a listed colour, black is the most common, there are also grey ones, and a few are white.

What does U mean in a server rack?
U is the standard unit of height in a 19-inch rack, equal to 44.45 mm. A 42U rack can hold equipment that takes up to 42 such units in total. Servers typically occupy 1U to 4U, while switches are often just 1U.
What depth of server rack do I need?
You need a rack deeper than your deepest device, with room left for cables. An 800 mm deep rack suits many servers, while switches and patch panels need less. Check the server depth in the manufacturer's specification before buying.
Can a wall-mounted rack hold a server?
A wall-mounted rack suits only a light, shallow server. These cabinets are mostly meant for switches, routers and patch panels. For a heavy server or a UPS, choose a floor-standing rack.
Does a server rack need ventilation?
Yes, because servers and switches give off heat, and it builds up inside a closed cabinet. Perforated doors and a fan module help, and the more equipment you install, the more important it is that air moves from front to back.
