The e-readers category covers devices with an E Ink screen made for long reading sessions without eye strain, from basic six-inch models to larger readers for PDFs and handwritten notes. Our range includes over 110 models, with PocketBook, Amazon Kindle, Onyx Boox and Kobo among the leading brands.
How to choose an e-reader
Screen size. A six-inch e-reader fits in one hand and in a small bag, which makes it easy to carry for novels on the move. A seven or eight-inch screen lets you use larger type without constant page turns. Ten-inch devices are meant for PDFs, textbooks and note-taking.
Lighting. A front light lets you read in the dark, and adjustable warm light is gentler on the eyes in the evening. An e-reader without a light only works in good daylight or under a lamp, so check this before buying.
Formats and bookstore. Kindle e-readers are closely tied to the Amazon bookstore, while Kobo and PocketBook models are more often used with files from different sources, such as EPUB and PDF. If you already have your own library or borrow books from public libraries, check which formats the model supports first.
Water resistance. Some e-readers are protected against splashes or even immersion (under the IPX8 standard). That helps if you read in the bath, by the pool or on the beach. The product specification states whether a model is actually protected.
Storage and extra features. A few gigabytes are enough for text books, while comics, PDFs and audiobooks need more space. Some models have Bluetooth for headphones or a speaker, and others have physical page-turn buttons that are easy to press with one hand.
Brands we carry
- PocketBook: the largest part of our range, known for supporting many file formats and, on some models, text-to-speech features.
- Amazon and Kindle: Kindle e-readers work with the Amazon bookstore, and books you buy there can be sent straight to the device.
- Onyx and Onyx Boox: many models run Android, so you can install reading apps, and their screens are often larger than those of typical e-readers.
- Kobo: owned by Japan's Rakuten, known for EPUB support and a simple way to manage your library.
- Tolino: an e-reader line created by an alliance of German booksellers and built around European bookstores.
Also in our range: GeckoCovers, Hama and Hannspree.
Frequently asked questions
How is an e-reader different from a tablet?
An e-reader has an E Ink screen that looks like paper and stays readable in direct sunlight. Its battery usually lasts for weeks rather than a day or two. A tablet is better for video and apps, but it tires your eyes faster during long reading sessions.
What size of e-reader should I choose?
A six-inch screen is enough for most people, since the device is light and fits in a pocket. If you read small print or documents, a seven or eight-inch model is more comfortable. For PDFs and notes, a ten-inch screen is the better option.
Can I read PDF files on an e-reader?
Yes, most e-readers open PDFs, but a full A4 page looks very small on a six-inch screen. Reading is easier on a larger device or on a model that lets you reflow the text. Larger Onyx Boox models are often chosen for exactly this purpose.
Do I need an e-reader with a built-in light?
Yes, if you read in the evening or in a dim room. A front light illuminates the screen without shining into your eyes, and warm light is more pleasant at night. Without one, an e-reader only works well where there is enough light already.
